IN REFORMING INDIAN CUSTOMS AND TRADITIONS, DON’T THROW THE BABY WITH BATHWATER-
I was sitting at an Israeli café in Rishikesh along with a group of friends from all over world. south korea, Spain, France etc and some Israelis relieving their military fatigue. Although Israel is very developed in technology but the café had bolster and small tables to make us seat traditionally on ground like in India. Among the Baklav and Pitha and with friends in their newly bought kurta pyjamam, a question came to me, Do you still live with your parents?. I was surprised at why they are surprised. their concern was does it affects my independence?
This question encouraged me to further think on how indian society has adapted to changing modern times and keeping best of both.
Earlier Indian families used to very strict with elder having firmer grip on the family. They would follow caste rules and choice imposed by elders. Even woman had lesser freedom under purdah. With changing time, globalization and ideas of liberty , equality and fraternity Individuals chose to exercise independence and “do what you love” . The west reformed by totally breaking from family values while India and other Eastern countries chose to exercise their independence but keep family in confidence and maintain ties with them. Its common to see Indians living with their parents, caring for old at the same time exercising their choices. While family also listens to what children want to do.
This is best seen in choices of marriage. Earlier choice of spouse was imposed. Its often heard in earlier generation stories that they had not even seen the bride and the groom. On the other extreme is extreme individual choice without taking family in confidence. In India keeping best of both a new trend is emerging that individuals fall in love with each other and them to arrange with families. This seems to work best as for stability not only individual but families should also get married. Some even say that’s the reason why marriages don’t last long in foreign countries of west US, UK etc. This affects the child’s growth essential in his early growing years and psychological well being in his later years.
Speaking of stability of marriage, in India it is seen considered as a relationship lasting seven lives. Although India does offer a better family life this taken to extreme became the dreadful practice of sati. It was also difficult to divorce and life of a divorcee and widows were pitiful. A reform on this front has led to a life for women much better than earlier. Now they can be equal partners. Can go to court for implementing their rights of alimony, divorce, property share, harassment, dowry etc. They can even adopt a child and be a single parent. But these rights were earned with great
