News Article Review Instructions

This week, you are required to submit brief essays, which discuss current news articles that relate to public policy. The purpose of this assignment is to encourage you to evaluate current public policy issues and their treatment in the media in light of the concepts covered in the readings and discussions occurring in the course. The news articles you select should illustrate a real-world application, or, where appropriate, a lack of application, of one or more of the concepts covered in the readings of the same module. Your essays should be critical reviews of the articles, meaning that you should provide your own analysis regarding the articles, rather than simply summarizing them.

Each review is due by the end of the module/week in which it is assigned. Review the News Article Review Grading Rubric to improve the quality of your essays and be sure to adhere to all of the specific guidelines described below.

News Article Selection Guidelines

The articles or news stories that you choose should be:

  • found in a newspaper, on a news program, or from another reputable media source (including reputable internet sources),
  • published within the last month,
  • clearly illustrating the application, or failure to apply, one or more of the concepts covered in the course during the week/module of the assignment.

Each article review must cover different topics. Refrain from using follow-up pieces or multiple perspectives of the same topic. For example, if you find an article discussing a new government regulation in The New York Times, you cannot use a follow-up piece put out a few days later in the same newspaper or a different article in a different newspaper discussing the same topic.

Essay Guidelines

Your essay should be 1-page, double-spaced. In the essay, you must summarize the article in order to demonstrate your comprehension of the content. Additionally, you should identify key elements discussed in the article and relate those elements back to concepts discussed in the course. Discuss whether the situation described in the article implements any of the concepts discussed in the course or if there are possible ways that concepts from the course could be implemented.

At the end of the essay, provide the complete citation for the article (including the publication date). If possible, you should include the actual article either by pasting it at the end of the document or by providing a link to the article. Format the essay and citation in current Turabian style.

Millions of older Americans who depend on federal benefits will receive a 1.7% increase in the monthly the following year. This is the third year in the disputes over the increase of less than 2% of the social security benefits. The Annual Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) has issued a directive of payment to at least 70 million federal retirees, disabled veterans and social security recipients. The social security benefit is meant to assist beneficiaries to maintain their standard of living by offering partial assistance against inflation. The law states that the increase depends on inflation, which is still below the historical averages. The congress established automatic increase for social security beneficiaries during 1975; the time when inflation was high, and there was much pressure to increase benefits regularly. It is now several years down the line when the COLA will be less than 2%.
The news of COLA for the next year has been anxiously awaited by many Americans who depend on the increase to sustain themselves due to the rising medical care, housing, transportation, and food expenses. Nevertheless, regardless of the partial relief that COLA will offer, the announcement is an indication that the method, which the government is adopting to calculate the rising cost of services and goods is not in order with the real life situation encountered by these beneficiaries. This is one of the recent several instances in which the humanistic government passes inappropriate policies that go against God’s law.
It is vital to understand that the government’s measure of inflation does not give an accurate reflection of price increases that should fit the needs of the older Americans. This is because the older people tend to use much of their income on healthcare. The increase in medical cost has reduced in the recent years, though these people are affected by serious ailments can still experience their individual costs rising.
Romans 13: 1-3 says that rulers (the governments) are a not terror to good work, but to the evil. This implies that a bad government is a terror to the evil work; a government that is run with injustice, tyranny, and crime. When the government violates God’s law, Christians are allowed to disobey the government. Christians have the responsibility to resist and even protest when necessary and to advocate an alternative solution. Christians should use legal, political and any other means to promote positive policies that cater for the needs of the beneficiaries. Young activists can advocate positive change if they know the art of communication. Christian should not fear resisting against inappropriate policies exercised by the humanistic government.
