THE FUTURE OF SOLAR ENERGY

The effects of global warming have led to the realization that sources of energy need to change to minimize this process (Turner 1999, 687). In the last decade, most governments around the world have invested in renewable sources of energy. Solar, wind, nuclear, and geothermal energies have in particular received attention around the world as governments try to meet the continuous rise in energy demands. However, wind and geothermal energy have limitations owing to availability of such resources. Although nuclear power has proven to be a reliable source of energy, the huge costs involved and safety issues have led to some countries such as Germany to close down some of the nuclear plants. In addition, the traditional use of hydroelectricity is being limited by dwindling water resources around the world. Therefore, solar energy remains one of the most promising sources of renewable energy in the future. Solar energy is an important renewable energy source because it is abundant throughout the world, simple to implement, while its environmental implications during installation is minimal (Turner 1999, 688).
The abundance of solar energy across the world is a major factor that will make it an energy source of the future. The amount of sunlight that reaches the Earth daily is several times higher than the total energy required by the population, making it one of the most abundant energy sources (Bradford 2006, 54). This means that solar energy collection is feasible almost everywhere. In addition, recent advancements in technology have enabled the collection of solar energy in cloudy conditions or at night. These new solutions imply that it is possible to power the world using solar energy throughout the year without having to worry about changes in weather conditions.
In comparison with other sources of renewable energy, solar energy is easy to install. Although the initial cost of installing solar panels is expensive, the installation process is simple and uses less time (Bradford 2006, 63). To build a hydroelectric generating station, it requires a lot of work due to construction of dams. Wind farms also involve a lot work during construction of wind turbines. In contrast, solar energy is less involving and especially in cases where it installed on the top of buildings. Moreover, solar panels have also proven to be less demanding when it comes to maintenance compared to hydroelectric and wind energy (Bradford 2006, 64).
Solar energy has minimal effect on the environment during installation. For example, installation of solar energy usually takes place in less productive areas (Bradford 2006, 69). In some cases, solar panels can be installed on building rooftops, which has little effect on the environment. In comparison, wind farms require large tracts of lands, whic...
