Beam Design. Beam Design to Eurocode 2. Engineering Math Problem (Math Problem Sample)
You are required to design an optimum concrete beam of length 15m. The beam is to be supported on two simple supports and must carry factored design loading of 20kN/m. You may choose to optimize your beam for either cost or embodied energy but you must show the calculated values for both criteria. Your report, of no more than 6 pages, must show all of the assumptions that you have made and calculated value of strength.

Introduction
Beam is a structural component that carries laterally applied loads. It primarily deflects through bending. When loads are applied on a beam, reactions forces are produced at its supports (Wight & MacGregor, 2005). The combination of all forces acting on the beam leads to production of bending moments and shear forces within the beam. It is these forces that create deflections, strains and internal stresses in the beam (Wight & MacGregor, 2005). Beams are categorised depending on how they are supported, their length, profile or cross-section and their material. Depending on the nature of the support, beam are classified as simply supported, fixed, double hanging, cantilever, trussed, continuous, and over hanging (Wight & MacGregor, 2005).
