Analysis of Suction, Ram and Biting as a Feeding Mechanism for Aquatic Animals
Introduction
The different ways in which aquatic organisms feed have been under constant debate because it has not yet been actually proven the main dominant feeding technique. According to researchers, feeding techniques include; suction, ram and biting (Ferry, Paig-Tran and Gibb 2015). Ram feeding is a feeding technique in water which a predator charges forward while opening its mouth engulfing the prey together with the water nearby (Ferry, Paig-Tran and Gibb 2015). This action may cause the prey to move away from the jaws but it becomes effective by letting the water flow through the jaw. Suction is inversely proportional to distance so the closer the prey to the mouth the higher the chance of capturing it (Ferry, Paig-Tran and Gibb 2015). To make this techniqueefficient the marauder moves close to the victim so the current produced can capture the prey into a void (Ferry, Paig-Tran and Gibb 2015). Biting is the action of closing the jaws on the prey. Predators usually use a combination of two techniques or all of them at the same time but biting must be present.
Background information
In different tests done to test the different feeding techniques, a number of variables are tested which includes, ram duration defined as the specific amount of time that a predator takes to strike on a prey, Suction duration, is the amount of time taken for the prey to move towards the predator during the incident (Ferry, Paig-Tran and Gibb 2015).
