ADHD and School Performance in Children
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, ADHD, makes learning difficult through loss of focus. The learners feel a constant need for movement, their thoughts drift and they have difficulty filtering their thoughts. Focus is essential in learning as it is the entrée to memory, reasoning, decision making and problem solving. Consequently, learners with ADHD have difficulties in learning (Mangina, 774). However, correlation tests however can be done to determine the level in which ADHD affects learning and help remedy the learning difficulties that come with ADHD. ADHD is therefore the independent variable and learning is the dependent variable. Consider the following data from a study involving 10 students in middle school using duration of focus over a 10 minute interval as a measure for ADHD, from one to 10 with ten being the highest level of focus and 1 being the lowest, and the success rate in a test as a measure of learning ability. Using α = 0.05
The hypothesis statements are
H 0 : ADHD and learning are not correlated
H a : ADHD and learning are correlated
Students
