Written by Brian Wayne Peterson and directed by Jamie Babbit, the film But I'm a Cheerleader (1999) stands out among those addressing sexuality and sexual identity issues. It features the character Megan Bloomfield as a lesbian high school cheerleader in a society that is overly skeptical about same-sex relationships. The plot presents Bloomfield as a happy cheerleader in high school. She dates Jared but feels more attracted to females.
