The term Oppositional gaze has been used to signify how staring at someone in the past was considered rude, frustrating, and violent (Hook pg 115). Based on this concept, the film “just another girl” portrays the inequalities that black Americans face, especially women under the whites. In this film, the main character is a girl identified as Chantel, a Black American from a humble background where one of the parents works during the day while the other works at night shift. Although she is a bright girl and is determined to become a doctor after completing her studies, Chantel has a part-time job but gets pregnant. She falls in love with her wealthy boyfriend, and she spends some of her time at the boyfriend’s home. Among the reasons that Chantel falls in love with her wealthy boyfriend is because she is from a poor background and is lonely. However, the relationship does not solve her problems but kills her dreams by making her pregnant, and she is undecided about the pregnancy. She descends into hatred and desperation and does not want to see her boyfriend.
In a history class, Chantel is inquisitive. She asks the teacher several questions regarding the Black Americans. Still, the teacher dismisses her questions, arguing that they are in a history class and it is not time to discuss contemporary issues. Unsatisfied, Chantel continues asking questions and demands answers from the professor, who ignores and warns her after the class to stop asking him questions during his style or he will punish her. Based on the concept of the oppositional gaze, the author recalls moments when they were young, and adults would prevent them from staring at them. In the film just another girl, the oppositional gaze presents how the blacks were oppressed by the whites, especially women in cinema (pg 115). Therefore, this essay will focus on the argument that black women in film suffered from hostility, racism, and discrimination against gender. Similarly, the paper will address the effects of discrimination on women in film that resulted in feminism and determine to what extent these effects harm women. Lastly, the essay will establish the measures that should be developed to regulate further harm resulting from the oppositional gaze.
