Director Ridley Scott produced the G.I. Jane and it first hit the theaters in August 1997. The movie is a two hour long action flick that has raised so many debates over the years. It revolves around the study of Lt. Jordan O’Neil. She is a test subject to present women in combat. She knows firsthand that sixty percent of the men recruited into the marine core never get to graduate. She pushes herself beyond her limits to attain a goal she claims is not meant for her to be the poster girl for women’s rights but to prove to herself that she can do it. Jordan unconsciously arouses a study of psychological concepts. This paper address some of these concepts; Overconfidence Phenomenon, Evolutionary Psychology, and Self-Esteem.
The Overconfidence Phenomenon is a theory of cognitive prejudice in psychology where one shows traits of being more confident than they truly are. Through either overestimating their abilities, or believing themselves to be better than others through over-placement, or by believing completely in the truth of their own beliefs through over-precision. In Demo 3-6, the professor picked ten volunteers to give a statement about themselves that could either be true, or false, and the class had to infer whether the statement they presented as a fact about themselves was the truth or a lie. The class also had to give a percentage of how right they thought they were when answering. A large number of the class gave each of their answers a high percentage, showing that they believed in their answers being right, regardless of whether they were wrong or right, thereby supporting the Overconfidence Phenomenon through over-precision, i.e., believing thoroughly in their belief or perception of the reality presented.
Lt Jordan O’Neil accepts to enter a program that has broken over sixty percent of the males who have never graduated. She is confident about going through the program and graduating, unlike critic's opinion. She deals with double standard rules at the beginning of the movie and she eventually asks the captain to be treated as equal to the rest of the men. She has this confidence of being no different from any other participant while, in the real sense, she is different and in so many ways she cannot be able to tackle some activities. She proves her ego right when she passes and completes the training, proving that women can complete the marine core program.
The concept of Self-Esteem is an overall self evaluation in the sense of value of an individual. It is best summarized as how one feel about themselves as individuals living in a society. The illustration in Demo 2-1, shows that students were provided with ten statements which they had to rank according to how much they “strongly agree[d] = 1, agree[d] = 2, disagree[d] = 3, or strongly disagree[d] = 4” with the given statements. Holistic scores within the range of 31-40 were deemed to have low self-esteem, the range of 21-30 had a moderate level of self-esteem, and the range of 10-20 had high self-esteem. The class thereby figured out their individual levels of self-esteem through this demo, by seeing how they reacted to the statements wherein they had to agree, or disagree in varying degrees.
When Jordan arrives at the Navy base she is greeted with the whistling of her, and vulgar males who do not what to give her the satisfaction of feeling she fits. Her self esteem is challenged, but she rises above this and presents the males with a challenge they can not measure up to. She wants no special treatment because she is a lady. She has an ego so big that she accepts to enroll for a program no woman has had a chance to try out. Her self esteem is very high and is not impaired by anything that is thrown her direction.
The concept of Evolutionary Psychology is the study of evolution of behavior using principles of natural selection. It was displayed to the class through Demo 5-2, where various questions were posed, such as, if your kids aged one and five were drowning, who would you save, or if they were 20, and 40 years old respectively, which one would you save? It was shown that most people picked the five year old and the 20 year old because from an evolutionary standpoint, they were seen to be the most favorable of the choices that could live longer and procreate. Also, the class was asked how important intelligence was in the opposite sex when they were dating, and then in having sex. The majority of females in the class stated that the intelligence was crucial to them in both respects, whereas the males thought it wasn’t necessary for their partner while ...
