Family Television Shows
The television shows, The Brady Bunch and Everybody Loves Raymond, are comedies trying to show the daily life experiences of American families. The Brady Bunch was produced and aired in the later years of the 1960s and ran all through to the mid-1970s. Mike Brady is a widower with three boys. He marries Carol, a widow, with three girls. The show is about the family formed as they live and grow up together CITATION Bra90 \l 1033 (Brady, 1990). Everybody Loves Raymond was produced and aired in the late 90s and early 2000s. Ray Barone and Debra Barone are a couple with three kids who live in a nice house, own a fancy car and have a stable income CITATION Ram12 \l 1033 (Ramizsk, 2012). One realizes that the time settings of these two family shows are different and the manner in which the families are also formed are also different. This paper aims to analyze the similarities and differences that exist between the two families depicted by this two television shows.
Differences
Residential Patterns
In Everybody Loves Raymond, the Barones are a patri-local family. Rays parents, Frank and Marie live next door. As a result of their close proximity, they are constantly involved in the affairs of Ray's nuclear family CITATION Tra \l 1033 (Tranter, n.d.). In The Brady Bunch, The Bradys are a neolocal family. Both parents (Mike and Carol) do not live close to their parents CITATION Hud13 \l 1033 (Hudnutt, 2013).
Marital Division of Labor
In Everybody Loves Raymond, Debra (Ray's wife) is the one who does all the household chores. She cooks, cleans the house, and takes care of the children CITATION Ram12 \l 1033 (Ramizsk, 2012). In The Brady Bunch, the couple, Mike and Carol share responsibilities. Mike helps Carol wash the dishes after supper CITATION Hud13 \l 1033 (Hudnutt, 2013).
Similarities
Traditional Pattern
Both families in the two shows follow the traditional pattern. In Everybody Loves Raymond, Raymond is the bread winner CITATION Tra \l 1033 (Tranter, n.d.). Debra is the housewife who takes care of the family. In The Brady Bunch, Mike is the bread winner while Carol is the housewife who takes care of the family CITATION Hud13 \l 1033 (Hudnutt, 2013).
