You have a choice of 4 films from popular culture, each representing mental health issues in a different way. Students need to choose 1 of these films and write a 1350 (minimum) - 1500 word (maximum) case analysis. The films you can choose from are: The Shining I The Babadook I Black Swan I Joker.
How should the reviews be structured?
It is important that your case analysis follows the structure outlined below.
Introduction (150 words)
This section briefly introduces the subject (i.e., popular I cinematic representations of mental health) and provides a brief synopsis of your chosen film.
Main Body (1200 words)
This section should be planned and organised into 2 or 3 equal parts (i.e., 3 x 400 words or 2 x 600 words) .You should use subheadings for these sections - the content of these will depend on your individual analysis of the film. Case Analysis of the Film Joker
Introduction
Fictional depictions of mental illness both are common and powerful. Since the early 20th century, whether explicitly or implicitly, mental illness has been incorporated into the movie's plotlines, subplots, and character types (Livingston 2004). The cinematic industry has a long history of portraying mental disorders in muddled, dismissive, and often violent ways (Gabbard et al., 1999). Popular movies depicting characters with psychological disorders commonly depict the signs incorrectly; this distortion of images can be seen as inherently problematic. This article evaluates the portrayal of mental illness, mental health, and violent behaviour as in the film "Joker." 'Joker is an American thriller film released in October 2019 and stars Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck/Joker. Arthur Fleck, a stand-up comedian, lives in the city with his mother, Penny. Arthur does have an illness, but he must rely on social services for medication because he is poor. He is attacked by male strangers, prompting his workmate Randal to provide him with a gun for defence. Acquiring this gun is the start of his problems, as he ends up going through tragic events that lead to him becoming a serial killer and a wanted criminal by the New York City Police department. This show's storyline is set in Gotham, a town rife with crime and unemployment, as well as a sizable poor population
Mental health diagnosis in the Joker
Joker paints a distinct image that's also strewn to multiple goals spanning the development of a storyline to the adventure of Arthur Fleck's emotional psycho life. Though the film does not seem to provide a backstory for the supervillain Joker, it does so via the meticulous design of a storyline about worsening mental health resulting from extraordinarily stressful and detrimental occurrences and individuals, merged to childhood maltreatment.
