A Woman in Berlin is an account of the final days of the Second World War in Germany when the Soviet Union captured and controlled Berlin City. It describes the experience of women in the hands of the Russian troops during the war period. The book uses one woman, a journalist, to express the painful experience and devastating effects of war on women and children.
Nina Hoss, a female reporter was a residing in Berlin by 1945 when the Second World War was coming to a close. She and other women were exposed to abuse by Russian troops after the decimation of German troops. Their property had been reduced to rumbles after a big fraction of Berlin was bombed. Women were fearfully awaited the fate as they suffered under the control of Russian soldiers.
The journal also presents the efforts made by the vulnerable women to survive. It presents several rape cases in which Russian soldiers raped women, including Nina, the main character. Nina among other women decided to form relationships with Soviet Union officers for protection after she had been gang-raped by soldiers. She describes it as “sleeping for food” since the women did not have an option to protect them from abuse by the harsh soviet officers. She also struggles to endure the traumatic experience after repeated rapes. Alongside her were other women and teenage girls who could hardly finish a day without being attacked.
