Analysis of The Vietnam War in The “Forrest Gump” Movie
“Forrest Gump” is a 1994 film directed by Robert Zemeckis. It depicts the life story of Forrest, a man who was born disadvantaged, faces many obstacles in his life, and triumphs in the end. Intriguingly, Forrest has various encounters with significant moments in American history as he embarks on his life journey. One of the historical aspects extensively represented in the film is the Vietnam War. Part of Forrest’s journey is being involved in the Vietnam War, and the film manifests significant historical themes related to the war.
The film’s setting aligns with the height of the Vietnam War. In 1981, a fresh post-war period, Forrest begins his life narration when he was a young boy in 1956, arguably symbolic to the start of the war, which began in November 1955. Immediately after college, Forrest enlists in the army and one year later assigned to the Vietnam War. He shares that he believes some of the country’s iconic young men served in the Vietnam War. The time setting and Forrest’s character exhibit the significance of the war to America.
