Heaven Knows What
Introduction
"Heaven Knows What" is the latest film directed by Benny and Josh Safdie, who are celebrated filmmakers. It is a junkie chronicle that was released by Radius-TWC, on May 2015 in the United States; it runs for 1 hour 34 minutes. The characters in this movie are Arielle Holmes (Harley-the lead character), Necro (Skully), Pleskun Yuri (Tommy-a drug peddler), Hendricks Eleonore (Erica), Caleb Jones (Ilya), Benjamin Hampton (Antoine), Diana Singh (Diana) and Buddy Duress (Mike). Heaven Knows What is a distinct and a well thought out movie that accurately depicts what it means being a heroin addict, the challenges faced and how addict struggle to self-recognition (D'Angelo). The film is based on Arielle Holmes’ account that was unpublished and fictionalized at that time.
Thesis statement
Drug peddling and addiction is still a menace in the United States. Addiction severely affects both young and old by destroying their lives and leaves them helpless and homeless in the long run as experienced by Arielle Holmes, who is only nineteen years of age.
Body
The saldfie brothers met Arielle Holmes while working on a different film project; they knew she had a story to tell. She relayed the story of her life, her dependency on heroine, her homelessness, the relationship she had with Ilya-an unscrupulous punk (Festival). Later, Holmes was commissioned by the saldies to put it in writings and then she got hired to re-enact the story.
Characters in this movie lead their entire lives in the New York Streets. In case they are arguing-which is obvious – passers-by seem not to mind the commotion completely, they go on with their business because they are used to them.
Harley, the main focus of the Saldies, is completely a heroin addict. She is severely obsessed with Ilya, who is a fellow addict (Taylor). We first meet Harley when she is in fully agitated mode, threatening her boyfriend Ilya that she will take away her life. Harley is so drunk in love that she wants to prove it by sacrificing her life. She was reacting to her boyfriend’s response: To prove her love for him if she really meant it. This act separates them for a while.
This breakaway from Ilya exposes her day to day life on the upper-west side, in the byways and parks where she and her fellow doping friends call home. Eventually, she meets broad-shouldered dude called Skully who offers to help her and treat her well; however, it is apparent Skully has some unknown agendas. But Harley is not fascinated in being dated with sympathetic behaviors. She snubs him later on.
From a fix to another, the film tumbles on with the lead character-Harley; her tough long blond hair and enthusiastic eyes that still suggest a teen runaway as opposed to burnout. In this film, the dire need of addiction is not center and front, and the directors do not glamorize her life, that is partially drawn from Holmes’, who cast after an encounter in the street (Olsen).
Conclusion
Heaven knows what exposes what Harley experienced by building up scratch perceptions: the unending heated arguments and negotiations, the emerging glance exchanges, and the unending street pursuits. Ilya, Harley’s fascination is just a cowardly creep; however the resulting fierce independent is conceivably the most hazardous drug for her. She remains partly uninformed and opaque, maybe because she has not yet rediscovered herself beyond chasing drugs and Ilya CITATION Ken14 \l 2057 (Fujishima). This film is provocative; it stamps its mark both in a thrilling and agonizing manner. Truly, it is a stunner.
