Women are disproportionately affected by breast cancer, which ranks second most common. There is a greater danger for women over the age of 50. Breast cancer develops first in the breast tissue. It is brought on by the proliferation and mutation of breast cells, which may lead to a tumor. Like other malignancies, breast cancer may spread to the periphery of the breast. It may also travel to other body parts and cause tumors if it has not been treated (Coughlin, 2019). These cells congregate and grow faster than normal cells, generating a lump or mass (Coughlin, 2019). Metastasis, the spread of cancerous cells, may occur from the breast to the lymph nodes. Due to increased lifetime exposure to estrogen and progesterone, women who delay menopause until beyond age 55 are also at an increased risk of getting breast cancer.

Breast cancer is caused by mutations or changes to the DNA in breast cells because they disrupt the normal regulation of cell growth and division.
