Technology has infiltrated human lives to become part of it. Every day, there is new development of technological innovation that comes to impact human lives on one aspect or another. The internet is one of the greatest technological innovations to have ever existed. It has not only transformed the way people live, but it has actually created another world, the virtual world, in which people can virtually exist and conduct their daily lives operations, just as they would do in the real world (Szmigin & Piacentini, 2014). The internet contains people’s personal details ranging from their friends, jobs, family, businesses, and schooling among others. The internet has ease people’s lives by hastening communication, transactions and facilitating faster business operations. The internet has transformed the world into a global village where geographical boundaries have cease to be a barrier to people’s interactions. As the world continues to embrace more development in the internet infrastructure, more innovations keep on emerging. One of the most recent innovations that have shaken the world by revolutionizing people’s lives and that of the business world is Smartphone (Kardes, Cronley, & Cline, 2014). Smartphone has made communication and information to transfer faster and faster, owing to its internet capabilities. This paper seeks to report how smartphones have revolutionize business world, by focusing on how the technology has changed consumer behavior, business operations, and the advertising world, driving purchases of goods and services.
Understanding Smartphones
Today, smartphones represent an extension of human lives. In every place, be it in workplaces or social places, people can be seen holding their smartphones either making or receiving calls, chatting, surfing the internet or merely performing some personal functions or operations. It is estimated that out of all the mobile phones existing in the world, smartphones account for 24% of these (Pew Research Center, 2014). This number is huge yet is expected to go up every year by 50%. Many people are believed to getting addicted to using smartphones. The device is equipped with various functions and capabilities that facilitate different functions such as shopping, socialization, personal organization applications, general internet surfing among many more (Kardes, Cronley, & Cline, 2014). The technology is currently replacing the use of computers at a great rate, because of its convenience, portability, and stylish nature, which get much favors especially among the teens. In the U.S alone, 58% of all adults own smartphones. Out of this, 83% of persons below age thirty have a smartphone, demonstrating how much receptive people are, to smartphone technologies (Pew Research Center, 2014).
Management of Business Operations
Smartphones are highly used in running business operations. Many companies have embraced modernity by incorporating the use of smartphones technologies to facilitate running business operations. Today, employees can complete out-of-office tasks by simply utilizing various applications in their phones to facilitate the processes (Riedy, Beros, & Wen, 2011). For instance, salesmanship entails moving around to get contacts and meet new potential clients. During such times, a salesperson can access his office email, draft sales reports, and make sales calls without having to be at the office. This way, he can multitask, performing field functions while still connected to the office. Smartphones facilitate instance exchange of information between management personnel and employees irrespective of where one is located, in the world. Smartphones are equipped with considerable data storage capacity to enable the storage of business information. They also have different applications such as video recording and editing capabilities, and document formatting features to make it easier to operate office tasks in the phone (Riedy, Beros, & Wen, 2011). More business record can now be stored in smartphones for easy retrieval where one is. Smartphones unique security features come in handy to protect such business data and records from being accessed by unauthorized person, making the device suitable for business operations.
Smartphone can also enhance easy management of employees. They provide data that can be used to monitor employees’ behaviours and their locations to establish if they correspond to organization policy and standards (Riedy, Beros, & Wen, 2011). This way, management personnel are able to ensure employees adhere to their duties and responsibility, enhancing business efficiency, which is responsible for more productivity and profitability. This is especially, necessary among sales persons, as it may help to track their operations to verify if they pursue organization’s objectives when they are out of office in the name of meeting clients and pursuing new customers.
Change the Way Consumers Shop
The internet offers the biggest shopping spot that has ever existed. Millions of shops and businesses offering consumer goods and services have established their presence online, making the internet one major single shopping center (Kardes, Cronley, & Cline, 2014). Different applications come with smartphones while others are downloadable to facilitate easy access to different shops or market places all over the world. Nowadays, it has become easy to access information about different markets and the products or services. It is estimated that over 96% of those with smartphones use them to research information about products and services online (Pew Research Center, 2014). Consumers can compare different markets by accessing their information online from their smartphones, enhancing consumer awareness about the available markets. This way, consumers become smarter shoppers by making informed decisions before purchasing any product or service, thus enhancing consumer satisfaction.
Information accessibility about markets has also changed people’s preferred shopping locations. For instance, there are those who find shopping online to be more convenient while others prefer shopping in-store after comparing the information about the different features offered in the different markets. Smartphones facilitate people to shop from various online shops at their comfort of their homes or offices. In the U.S alone, close to 35% of smartphone owners make their purchases using their smartphones (Pew Research Center, 2014). A majority of these online shoppers become frequent buyers because their smartphones allow them an easy and convenient shopping experience. Just as computers, smartphones have allowed people to explore even markets that are beyond their national boundaries. For instance, consumers from the U.S can purchase items or services from a country like China by using smartphones applications. This way, smartphones have allowed businesses to experience an increase in foreign buyers, making businesses acquire wider market bases all over the world. Banks also have adopted the digital way of banking and this has helped many people embrace online banking, which they can easily access with their smartphones when they want to purchase items or services online (Kardes, Cronley, & Cline, 2014). This has been facilitated by the fact that smartphones are carried everywhere and the internet is accessible all the time, anywhere.
