A Reflection on Development and Intellectual Disabilities
In human civilizations all over the world, the belief that a person without abilities is superior to those with abilities has long been prevalent. It has also become inherent in the thoughts of service providers, policymakers, and those who care for people with disabilities. The concept has imbued society so extensively that most individuals are unconscious of it.
Fitting In, Letting Go highlights the realities of people living with disabilities. The author, Sherri L. Rings, a tenured associate professor and certified clinical psychologist at a renowned East Coast urban college, discusses her own experiences as well as those of the children she has mentored who have disabilities. Despite facing different challenges, these children have admirable qualities such as acceptance and being able to stand up for themselves when faced with ableism (Rings, 2019, p. 184). They achieve things deemed as impossible or challenging for them thus proving those doubting them wrong.
Children living with disabilities experience vast challenges, such as pain, being objectified, anxiety, discrimination and bullying. Some of these children often have to undergo numerous corrective surgeries in attempts to make them fit in the society. Discrimination, bullying and ableism, for example in schools, is the major cause of anxiety and self-consciousness as these children face constant reminders of their differences. Additionally, these children take on part of their parents' feelings, including anxiety, dread, and other emotions, and frequently feel responsible for them (Rings, 2019, p. 176). Sherri also explains how she as objectified and embarrassed by doctors as a child.
I felt less like a carefree young kid and more like an object, an anomaly, or a diagnosis after several medical sessions where grownups (who were essentially strangers to me) moved and flexed my limbs, examined and stared at me, and occasionally talked about me as if I were not even present (Rings, 2019, p. 179)
One of the most difficult problems in modern life is developmental disability. As it becomes apparent that merely meeting their basic requirements would be impossible, the direct or costs of having a child with special needs can occasionally overburden a family. The amount of money that many families will need to spend on this child, including costs of living and medical requirements, can be overwhelming. This costs may be direct or indirect. Direct expenses are incurred because of the child's condition whereas indirect expenses are incurred as the family chooses how to handle the disability. Although estimates within households vary greatly, the statistics show to significant direct expenses for families of children with impairments (Stabile & Allin, 2012). Families with children who have a special medical services requirement end up spending more out of pocket, especially for medical expenses. A significant indirect cost for these families is related to career options.
