1 EXT. FRONT PORCH - LATE AFTERNOON
Sky is gloomy and heavy rain is pouring.
ARTHUR (70), standing at the far left of the front porch, facing the left side while smoking. He puffs out the smoke into the rain to wash out the smoke right away. He hears his wife’s scolding about smoking.
MARTHA (O.S)
(irritated)
That’s going to leave a smell on your finger and breath. Your clothes will smell too!
ARTHUR
She’s gonna scold me again if she smells this.
He inhales smoke from the cigarette one last time and puffs out the smoke in the rain again. He crushes the cigarette burn on the soil in a plant pot next to him. He heads to the door with the cigarette butt held by his left hand. He drops the cigarette butt inside a small trash bin next to the door.
EXT./INT.
ARTHUR opens the door.
ARTHUR
I should get changed.
The home is dimly lit with the only light coming from the kitchen. ARTHUR remembers his wife’s words. He slightly lowers his head while nodding.
ARTHUR
(smiling)
Ah...
ARTHUR and MARTHA (O.S.) in unison.
ARTHUR
The house should be kept well-lit. An intruder will think no one is home.
MARTHA (O.S)
(bossy)
The house should be kept well-lit. An intruder will think no one is home.
ARTHUR turns to his right side to find the light switch. He turns on the lights in the living area and the hallway, lighting the entire house. ARTHUR looks around the house.
ARTHUR
That’s better...
ARTHUR starts walking towards the stairs.
ARTHUR
I should change these clothes...
ARTHUR smells his sweatshirt.
ARTHUR
I should wash it myself too. She’s not supposed to know I’ve just lit another stick. I don’t wanna receive an earful.
2 INT. BEDROOM
ARTHUR is picking a pair of pants from the drawer. He is about to pull out a pair of pajamas when he hears what his wife taught him.
MARTHA (O.S)
(scolding)
Don’t just pull out the clothes! You old man.
ARTHUR
Ok... Ok... I remember
The clothes are neatly folded and vertically lined in the drawer. He starts doing what his wife told him.
ARTHUR
Do this...
ARTHUR slips one hand behind the pair of pajamas he picked.
ARTHUR
...push this back...
He pushes back the clothes behind it.
ARTHUR
... aaand pull out.
He smoothly takes out his pajamas without ruining the arrangement of the clothes. ARTHUR proudly closes the drawer while taking his pair of pajamas.
3 INT. BATHROOM - NIGHT
ARTHUR has taken his sweatshirt off. He smells it.
ARTHUR
Oooh. That cigarette is really strong.
ARTHUR takes all of his clothes off.
ARTHUR
That was why MARTHA hated it...
I should quit smoking.
ARTHUR goes in the tub to take a shower. He is about to turn the water running when he glances at the shower curtain.
MARTHA (O.S)
What did I say about the shower curtain?
ARTHUR
I know... I know
MARTHA (O.S)
When you draw the curtain...
ARTHUR starts drawing the curtain and repeats after his wife’s words.
ARTHUR
When I draw the curtain...
MARTHA (O.S.)
Tuck the end of the curtain inside the tub.
ARTHUR pulls the end of the curtain in the tub. He repeats after his wife again.
ARTHUR
Tuck the end of the curtain inside the tub.
MARTHA (O.S)
Why?
ARTHUR
... so that the water will not drip on the floor. Right.
ARTHUR turns to the faucet, runs the water, and starts taking a shower.
ARTHUR is done showering and draws the curtain carefully.
ARTHUR
Martha gets mad if the water touches the floor.
MARTHA (O.S)
It’s good that you remember.
ARTHUR slightly smiled after his wife’s words while stepping out of the bathtub. He reaches for the towel and drapes it on his waist. He rubs his feet on the mat and lands his look on his clothes on the sink.
ARTHUR
(panicking)
Oh... Oh... Right. My clothes. I have to wash them before MARTHA sees them.
He hurries to put the clothes in the sink and starts running the water. He gently rubs the clothes on the running water. He remembers his wife’s words again.
MARTHA (O.S)
When washing the clothes...
ARTHUR finishes for his wife.
ARTHUR
...rub gently on running water to reduce the dirt. I know.
ARTHUR stops rubbing and looks in the mirror wondering.
ARTHUR
When do I use the detergent again?
ARTHUR takes his hands off the clothes, turns off the water, and dries his hand on the towel around his waist. He walks to the bathroom door and leaves.
4 INT. LAUNDRY ROOM - NIGHT
ARTHUR is crouched in front of a small cabinet in the laundry room. He holds the cabinet doors open while looking inside.
ARTHUR
(confused)
A lot is going on in here. Which one should I use?
ARTHUR picks a plastic container with one in each hand and stands up. He reads the left container.
ARTHUR
Fabric conditioner...
ARTHUR looks at the other container and reads the label.
ARTHUR
...fabric detergent... Hmmm. I know I can use this one.
ARTHUR looks back at the fabric conditioner he is holding.
ARTHUR
But what are you for?
ARTHUR shakes the fabric conditioner container.
ARTHUR
Ow! It’s almost empty. And it’s liquid.
ARTHUR puts down the fabric detergent container on top of the small cabinet. He opens the fabric conditioner and brings the opening close to his nose to smell the inside.
ARTHUR
Hmmm... Smells like MARTHA.
ARTHUR closes the lid and picks up the fabric detergent container again.
ARTHUR
I should use this too.
ARTHUR heads out of the laundry room.
ARTHUR
I don’t know how but I’ll figure it out. MARTHA would be proud of me if she heard about this.
5 INT. BATHROOM
ARTHUR is standing in front of the sink with his left arm across his chest and the right hand is covering his mouth. The fabric conditioner and fabric detergent containers stand on the sink top. He is looking at the containers with confusion.
ARTHUR
What.Should.I.Use?
ARTHUR shifts his look to the clothes in the sink.
ARTHUR
Ah! The clothes!
He quickly leans on the sink and reaches for the damp clothes.
ARTHUR
I should squeeze them first.
ARTHUR squeezes the clothes one by one and places them on top of each other on the sink top. He wiggles his hands to remove excess water while looking at the two containers. He reaches and lifts the fabric detergent container and looks at it again.
ARTHUR
This is the one that bubbles right? I’m gonna use this.
ARTHUR places back the container on the sink top and searches for a basin. He turns around, glances on top of the toilet, and crouches to search under the sink. He ...
