Penalties for NFL Domestic Violence Offenders
Recently, a significant number of domestic violence cases involving people in the NFL have been witnessed. Several players have been punished, for having been found guilty of these offences. However, until recently, there have been no specific legislation on those that are found guilty would be punished.
This has forced the league to make sure that they protect these people, either NFL players, owners, and other subordinates in this sport, together with their families. These articles seek to bring into light the new rules that the leagues has instituted, to be followed in the event this crime is committed.
According to the article by Wilson (2014), the league has come up with strict penalties, which will be used to punish both first time and subsequent offenders. According to the rules, those that are found guilt for the first time will be punished for six games while they would be banned for life if they committed the offence for subsequent times. Another aspect about the new rules that the article seeks to highlight is the fact that these rules do not apply only to NFL players, but to all those involved – players, owners, and staff.
According to the article by McManus (2014), these penalties would be implemented with immediate effect. According to the article, those who are found guilty would not be allowed any fine, meaning that they have to serve the match ban according to the rules. According to McManus, the decision to come up with these rules was inspired by the case of Rice, who had been accused of violence against his fiancé. He was banned for two games, something that sparked a public outcry that the punishment was lenient.
Just like Wilson (2014), McManus (2014), seeks to analyze the new rules that the NFL league has come up with, to govern what action would be taken in the event someone in the league would be found guilty of domestic violence. These rules would help the league avoid instance where there would be inconsistent punishments for these that are found guilty.
One can rightly conclude that the move by the NFL league is very timely. Rice, who is an NFL player, was found guilty of domestic violence, was banned for two games. In the view of this, it was necessary that the league came up with consistent rules. A ban of two games was rightly considered lenient, and the league needed to spell out the punishment for similar cases in the future. With the new rules, it would be easy to punish people that are found guilty, without the league having to be considered as inconsistent. When a person commits an offence for the first time, they will be punished for six games, while those who commit it for subsequent times are punished for a lifetime.
I consider the punishment for a first-time offender to be as good as we could have e...
