The Early Republic: Answers to Questions
Compare immigration to the United States in the 1840s and 1850s to immigration in the 20th and 21st centuries. Are there similarities? Differences?
Immigration in the United States in the 1840s and 1850s was fuelled by an increase in the demand for labor in the young nation. A majority of the immigrants from Germany and Ireland moved to the northern states where they did not have to compete for employment with slaves (Foner 264). The modernization of agriculture and industrialization eliminated the traditional jobs of craft workers. What is more, the political and religious freedoms in America attracted many people who were persecuted at home after failed political revolutions (Foner 264). However, a majority of the immigrants were Irish men who were fleeing the Great Famine that destroyed the nation's staple crop (Foner 264).
Similarly, immigration to the United States in the 20th and 21st centuries has been fuelled by identical factors. A significant number of the current immigrants in the country are looking for better economic opportunities (Hirschman & Mogford 899). Secondly, some of the immigrants come from politically unstable nations (Hirschman & Mogford 897). For example, there are scores of foreigners from Syria, Somalia, and Libya whose home nations are unstable due to terrorism and political disputes (Hirschman & Mogford, 2009). Finally, a small section of the immigrants come to America to escape political and religious persecution at home.
The increased immigration in the 1840s and 1850s was met by a rise in nativism in America. For example, the Alien Act of 1798 reflected the country's fear that some of the immigrants had radical political views (Foner 265). Besides, some of the Protestants feared that a spread in Catholicism threatened the country’s institutions and American Freedom (Foner 265). During the 21st century, immigration has become one of the most controversial political topics in the country. The country has witnessed a rise in anti-immigration rhetoric (Hirschman & Mogford 898). However, the 21st century has not experienced a lot of religious differences on account of religion. Instead, many religious leaders have called for tolerance and encouraged people to welcome the foreigners.
In today's society, who best resembles the ideas of the transcendentalists and their notions of individualism? For example, who may best resemble Henry David Thoreau's ideas from his stay at Walden? Explain your response with specific examples.
I think monks resemble the ideas of the transcendentalists and their views of individualism. First, a monk believes that he or she must ruminate and nourish his or her inner light to keep it healthy. Secondly, such people think that everybody has an inherent understanding of right and wrong that is understood with interaction from nature. The transcendentalists support the importance of individual conscience when in political, social, and personal matters (Foner 226). In the same way, monks hope to find an internal campus towards achieving peace away from the worldly concerns. Finally, meditation is similar to transcendentalism since it teaches that people should aim to overcome the physical desires for better spiritual rewards (Foner 226).
