The history of the relationship between China and the United States is complicated. Since the early centuries, the US-China relations have been unsteady due to the US foreign policy of containment, the assertiveness meme, and China being integrated into the international system. The most dominant theme in Sino-U.S. relations has been the emergence of a more assertive China. China's assertiveness has propelled international rivalry causing adverse consequences for both China and the US.
The unsteady US-China relations has been witnessed on several occasions. The signing of the USSR-PRC defense treaty between the Soviet Union and the People's Republic of China made the two the largest communist nations in the world. However, tension existed between China and the Soviet Union. The agreement was deeply aligned to communism, prompting the US to formulate a policy of containment, that defined the US-China relations for many years. The Containment policy was a strategy by the US to prevent the spread of communism abroad. However, the Sino-Soviet split propelled US-China relations.
