"The Convict Code does not Reflect our Culture's Moral Code." The convict code differs substantially from that of the non-convict population. At the core of the convict code is an attempt to create certainty in what is a high-stress environment. Subsequently, the conventional position is that convicts live by a code that is defined by respect for self and boundaries with others (MrArdaarif, 2012). Inmates expect each other to mind their business and to not tell on others. However, some subcultures impose certain values on the convict code. For instance, gangs within the prison may impose rules regarding racial mixing which then imply that racial groups hang around those of their background (MrArdaarif, 2012). Such allegiances are later seen in the response to events such as violence where people side with their own. Outside of convict culture, the average American lives by values such as independence, individualism, and equality. Among the United States’ most defining cultural values is that of liberty. This means that people are afforded certain inalienable rights (Mendis, 2023). Further, the concept of equality means no person is inherently superior to another. Second, people are taught to be self-sufficient from a young age. Most importantly, American culture upholds the idea of materialism, where personal success is a major drive for people. American culture and convict culture have both differences and similarities. First, differences include the fact that prison culture features hierarchies and group loyalty which imposes outside demands on individual freedoms. Unlike normal American culture, prisons are held to the values of the groups within which they find themselves. In terms of similarities, respect for individuals and collaboration in protecting group resources are some of the values that stand out as common between the convict code and American cultural values.
