Thermal Comfort in an Office Building
According to research, a higher percentage of people prefer adaptive strategies to mechanical solutions when it comes to providing thermal comfort in an office building. Therefore, it is much better to employ adaptive strategies as compared to mechanical solutions when providing thermal comfort in buildings (Helwig, Brasche & Bischof). For instance, it is better to design a building with large windows and effective ventilation as compared to constructing a building with small windows. Windows and ventilation let in fresh air with less humidity as compared to the air in the office environment. The free flow of air leaves a refreshing effect on the occupants of the building. On the other hand, installing fans and thermostats would just ensure that the same air with the same humidity flows within the room leaving a ‘boring’ effect on the office workers. However, where possible, adaptive strategies should be employed together with underlying mechanical solutions. Mechanical solutions would come in handy in extreme weather conditions such as winter and summer where adaptive strategies have little or no effect. For instance, during the summer, opening windows would let in hot air which might even be hotter than the air within the building making conditions more unbearable. Fans, in such a case, would prove more effective.
