Part I: Timeline
Create a timeline for each of the following civilizations, listing any major events in the civilization’s history:
* Mesopotamian
Ancient Mesopotamia is known as the cradle of civilization; a majority of the first empires and cities were founded there. Power shifted several times in ancient Mesopotamia; from the Sumer to Babylonians to the Persians.
5000BC – The first towns and cities are founded by the Sumer who employed irrigation in their agricultural activities.
4000BC – Powerful city states are established by the Sumer. Huge temples in the form of Ziggurats are built at the center of these cities.
3300BC – Writing is invented by the Sumerians. They inscribe pictures on clay tablets.
3200BC – The Sumerians build vehicles with wheels.
2330BC – The Akkadians conquer many of the Sumerian city states, thus creating the Akkadian Empire. The Akkadian language replaces the Sumerian language.
1792BC – Hammurabi ascends to power in Babylon and conquers most of Mesopotamia. He establishes the famous Code of Hammurabi.
1250BC – The Assyrians capture Babylon and begin using chariots and iron weapons.
522BC – Darius I becomes king; he divides the empire into states
333BC – Alexander the Great conquers the empire.
* Egyptian
Located along the river Nile, ancient Egypt was one of the oldest and longest lasting civilizations in the world.
2950BC – Menes, the first pharaoh unites upper and lower Egypt into a single kingdom; he establishes his headquarters at Memphis.
2575BC – The fourth dynasty of Egypt builds the pyramids of Giza, they also build the Sphinx.
2150BC – The old kingdom ends and Egypt splits into two.
1975BC – Mentuhotep II reunites Egypt. The Egyptians begin using water from the Nile to irrigate their crops.
1352BC – Akhenaten introduces the worship of a single god in Egypt.
525BC – Egypt is conquered by the Persians.
322BC – Alexander the Great conquers Egypt and builds the city of Alexandria.
* Hebrew
1300BC – The Israelites enter Canaan.
1050BC – The Israelite kingdom is established under Saul.
931BC – Israel is split into two kingdoms; Judah and Israel.
722BC – The Assyrians destroy the northern kingdom of Israel.
597BC – King Nebuchadnezzar invades and destroys Jerusalem. Men of Judah and Israel are exiled into Babylon.
538BC – The exiles are allowed back into Jerusalem by King Cyrus of Persia.
63BC – Judaea is conquered by the Romans who install the family of Herod as the Kings of Judaea.
132AD – The Jews rebel against the Romans. The temple is destroyed.
* Indus
The Indus valley civilization was situated in the northwestern area of the Indian subcontinent.
5000BC – The residents of the Indus valley begin religious practices.
4000BC – Farmers settle in the Indus valley.
3000BC – Urbanization begins in the Indus valley. The cities of Harappa and Mohenjo Daro rise.
2600BC – Towns and cities are built in the Indus Valley.
1500BC – The Aryans migrate into the Indus valley.
530BC – The Indus valley is conquered by the Persians.
* Vedic Aryan
10000BC – The existence of the Vedas begins.
7000BC – The Vedas begin using horses.
1900BC – The Saraswati River dries up.
1500BC – The Vedic School of medicine begins getting systemized.
1100BC – The Vedic Aryans begin using iron tools.
876BC – The invention of the zero.
150BC – The Kama Sutra is written.
* Chinese
Ancient China was located on the eastern side of Asia, it was ruled by powerful dynasties.
8000BC – Early settlers establish small villages along the Yellow and the Yangtze Rivers.
2696BC – The Yellow emperor begins ruling. His wife develops the silk making process.
2205BC – The Chinese learn the art of bronze work.
221BC – The Great Wall is built.
207BC – The Chinese civil service is established.
105AD – The court official Cai Lun invents paper.
868AD – Wood block printing is invented
1405AD – The construction of the Forbidden City begins.
1420AD – Beijing is made the new capital of China.
