1 How the civil rights movement changed the United States
The Civil Rights Movement is one of the most conspicuous events within the history of the United States. It was characterized by a significant upsurge in political and social protests with the minority groups within the United States, fighting for freedom and equality. Central to the civil rights movement was the realization of greater liberty for the American people who had suffered through centuries of injustices and subjugation. The greatest impact of the civil rights movement was the creation of awareness regarding the injustices that minority American communities were enduring. From the ending of segregation within governmental institutions, to the constitutional recognition of basic global human rights would see the American democracy attain hearts that were seemingly unattainable.
The impacts of the civil rights movement transcended the confines of minority societies, influencing the greater American society as a whole. The end of racial, ethnic and religion segregation set in motion the integration process within the larger American society. By making the separation of people illegal, the American people began to realize advancement as a unified nation, away from the politics of segregation. The political involvement of the African American population through the right to vote was another major achievement of the civil rights movement. By allowing the African Americans to vote and subsequently women as well, the American democracy was further strengthened, bringing about greater justice and liberty for the American people.
