Case Brief: Santa Fe Independent School District v. Doe (2000)
Case summary
In the case, Santa Fe Independent School District v. Doe, 530 U.S. 290 (2000), the respondents – Doe together with others such as Catholic and Mormon stakeholders – filed a case in the Supreme Court suing the Santa Fe school administration – the petitioners – for violating the US constitution by demanding that school chaplains lead prayers at football games involving schools in the region. They cited the constitutional articles that separated the state and church.[Santa Fe Independent School District v. Doe, 530 U.S. 290 (2000).]
Constitutional analysis
The constitution holds that school prayers are only a violation if they are conducted in a manner that the students do not accept.
Case facts
The respondents first filed the case in 1995 when they obtained a temporary restraining order compelling the petitioners to not coerce students in participating in prayers. In fact, the court established that prayers conducted before football games essentially forced students to engage in religious activities which they did not necessarily subscribe to. This violated the separation of state and church. Additionally, the court established that by sponsoring a particular religious inclination – Christianity – the school administration was transmitting the message that anyone who did not subscribe to their religious inclination was not part of the school co...
