Algebra at Work: Discussion
A critical concept I took away from the video was the vital role of coordinate geometry in shaping our perception of space. Toney DeRose classifies this concept into three categories: translation, scaling, and rotation, all of which help us to determine the size of an object, its shape, and its precise location (2:09) (TED-Ed, 2014). I realized just how comprehensive mathematics is and how relevant it remains to be in our lives in terms of our visualization, spatial communication, and perceptual mapping.
An additional math concept that I find relevant to my daily life is navigation and GPS, which form part of linear algebra. With the advent of Google Maps and other technological devices, we are constantly calculating distances and establishing routes to places we need to go. Linear algebra allows accurate navigation and mapping in terrestrial and aerial applications.
Navigation and GPS rely heavily on mathematical concepts, especially geometry and linear algebra, to determine positions, calculate distances, and provide accurate directions. The GPS coordinates use latitude, longitude, and altitude to specify locations on the Earth’s surface in a spherical coordinate system. Latitude represents the north-south position, longitude represents the east-west position, and altitude represents height above sea level. These coordinates are expressed in degrees, minutes, seconds, or decimal degrees. For example, when searching for a destination using GPS, the coordinates (latitude and longitude) are used to pinpoint the location accurately on the map.
