The American Red Cross is a non-profit humanitarian organization best known for offering services such as disaster preparedness training as well as local and international disaster relief in America. Also known as the American National Red Cross, the organization also provides nursing care and victim protection. The United States chapter of the Red Cross was established by Clara Barton who had learned about the branch in Geneva, Switzerland. During the Franco Prussian war, Miss Barton traveled to Europe and got involved with Red Cross. It was after her experiences in Europe that she sought to initiate the American chapter of the Red Cross. As president of the American Red Cross, Miss Burton would lead the organization in its very first significant relief efforts to the great 1881 fire, also dubbed the Thumb fire, which occurred in the Thumb region of Michigan. The other major disaster that the organization was involved in was the Johnstown flood of 1889 near Johnstown, Pennsylvania.
Over the years, the American Red Cross has grown and evolved to become one of the most popular humanitarian organizations in the country and also worldwide. As a not for profit charitable organization, the American Red Cross is exempt from government taxes. The American Red Cross is not funded by the government unless under particular circumstances when the organization is contracted by the government to assist in relief undertakings. As such, the humanitarian establishment mainly depends on donations and cost recovery charges for some of its services to fund its budget (Grabianowski, 2006).
