An advanced practice nurse (APN) is a nurse who has obtained advanced nursing training. An APN will either have a doctorate in nursing or a master’s degree certification, depending on the level of training. In most instances, an APN is referred to as an advanced practice registered nurse (APRP) and is categorized as one of the advanced practice providers. The certification of APNs allows them to see a patient without having a doctor, request diagnostic tests, make clinical diagnoses, and make conclusive and vital medical decisions. Thus, an APN can work in various clinical settings like hospitals, nursing homes, and medical offices. An APN can hold various certifications and roles, including clinical nurse specialist, nurse anesthetist, certified midwife-nurse, and nurse practitioner (Woo et al., 2020).
