1 Problem statement
In 2010, the Toyota Motor Corporation suffered an accelerator recall crisis, which unearthed other weaknesses in the Company products. The main issue at the time was the quality of the vehicles that the Corporation produced.
Before 2010, the Toyota Motors Corporation had an untarnished reputation as the best car manufacturer in the U.S and the World as well. As a world in the automotive business leader, the brand developed into the most reliable and trusted trademarks in the automobile industry with 12.8 % market share and approximately a revenue of 211 million U.S dollars as reported in the year 2009 (Gerondeau, 2015). Because of the increased demand and flow of business, the total quality management process sacrificed quality at the expense of volume of the products and growth of the company thereby causing the Corporation to shift its focus from high quality of the vehicles it manufactured. The firm ran into a series of car recalls due to faults in the vehicle qualities that caused the media to taint the positive reputation of Toyota (Khan, 2010). The market capitalization of Toyota also declined significantly, and the costs incurred by the company rose sharply.
1 Background of the issue
The decline in the total quality management of the Toyota manufacturing process is reported to have caused Toyota’s 2010 accelerator crisis. The problems reported by Toyota buyers include the accelerator pedal becoming harder to press or slow when returning and the accelerator pedal could become partly sticky while driving forcing drivers to switch to a neutral mode to stop the vehicles. The sticky pedals could cause unintended acceleration. Additionally, reports of failure to comply with requirements, for instance, tire selection and rims lacking carrying capacity and load labels, front shaft, and corrosion issues were also cited (Khan, 2010).
