Summary of the Article
The article ‘Ethics reflection groups in community health services: an evaluation study’ provides the initial phase of systematic ethics support when offering community health services in Norway. The research project aimed at evaluating systematic ethics reflection in nursing homes and residential places. A reflection group is chosen and incorporated as part of the project (Lillemoen & Pedersen, 2015). The participants of the study comprise service managers, group facilitators and employees of the organization. The research methods used in the project includes written reports, observations, and interviews. The setting of the study was at a residential home for people with disability and two nursing homes. The results obtained from the study showed that the support for ethical reflection is very significant in clinical practices in the society since moral standard principles guided the study. The study depicted an improvement in the relationship between the employees of the organization. The research provided improved solutions and cooperation between patients and their families. The evaluation study helped the healthcare team to identify what it should improve on to prosper.
Potential unethical research practices to be avoided
Unethical practices in the health sector are unlimited. In this research study, the participants should avoid conflicts of interest. The challenge affects nurses and doctors who are working with a target of promotion. Most workers do require promotions from various sectors such medical device, pharmaceutical, and manufacturing departments. Such employees may be tempted to adopt unethical practices in the organization to achieve their daydreams. The clinicians who tend to serve self-interest can even influence other employees to turn down the compensations from the management team hence delaying the decision-making process. Such behaviors have made most hospitals to ban logo items and free-meal presentations.
The issues of balancing profit for the patients with provided charity care have also affected many hospitals. The funds for improving the healthcare centers are scarce, so do nurses. The healthcare organization should come with criteria of balancing how they would invest in providing care for the patients. If the health management conducts its business with a prime target of making a profit, then it would utilize the scarce resources to care for the high class only in the society. The middle and low-class patients might not afford to purchase such services hence making the provision of medical services not to be directed to where they are most required.
In most hospitals, there is a wide gap between medical treatment for VIP patients and the other members of the society. The research study should not wrestle for equal treatment of VIP patients and other influential people. The participants of the research should conform to the regulations of the hospitals and attend to the first-class patients as scheduled. It follows the fact that the VIP patients are the financial donors and come from the trustees’ families. However, such behavior is unethical because the hospitals are not supposed to treat donors and trustees first before others (Petrie et al., 2014). It sometimes sounds awkward for the health practitioners to attend to first-class patients leaving others in a compromising situation.
The nurses and doctors do face challenges in managing geriatric patients who have no capacity of decision-making. Such patients are ethically impossible because they need to be with a clinician who prescribed all the times. The patients can even choose not to take the drugs if the nurses do not monitor them closely. It implies that the nurses should not work with pre-set attitude towards such patients (Ghaye & Lillyman, 2014). This study should offer equal treatment to all patients to implement support for ethics in health care centers. The care providers should make decisions based on the interest of the patients.
The nurses should also avoid unethical feelings that they might have towards the patients with minimal medical benefits. Some health practitioners who are providing care to patients who are on life support might be discouraged from why they are doing so. They can be stressed up and tend to execute their activities rather than offering bedside assistance. The nurses who provide care for patients who pay nothing have anxieties since other patients do pay for the same service.
The parties involved in the research that might face injury
The participants of the research study comprise employees of the organization, management team and research facilitators. Due unethical behavior in the organizations, the parties who face an acute injury is management team and the patients. The conflicts of interest that the doctors and nurses have would only affected the patients and the management. When the nurses try to portray unethical behavior to achieve their dreams, it is the patients and the management who suffer. The management team can face opposition from the employees because of incitement or influence from other workers who targets promotions.
