As a law enforcement officer – Deputy Sheriff in a small town, my department tasked me to oversee and solve the emerging issue of the emergence of petty criminal gangs in the area. I had to perform an opportunity cost analysis. An opportunity cost analysis is a crucial element of cost-benefit analysis (Brickley, Smith, & Zimmerman, 2016). The gangs have recently terrorized the town and threatening small business owners. From the records, cases of theft and mugging have risen. The budget of the plan was set at 50,000 USD.
I needed to form a community group of hired members to help me crack down the criminal gang. The group would work for three months. Besides, I would use part of the 50,000 USD to offer them training and tactics to infiltrate the gangs and aid in their arrest. I would use the rest of the money to pay them monthly and buy relevant machinery for the operation. The short-term benefit would be the total arrest of the gang members who would be sent to jail for a maximum of two years. The long-term benefit, however, would be a total fail since other members of the society already inspired by the gang would form new groups and the old gang would reemerge after their release from prison.
The second option would entail buying security machinery and equipment to work and install in several red areas in the town and the same cost: 50,000. It would include buying more CCTV cameras and three patrol vehicles to ensure that the whole town is secure as my team (on the government payroll) arrest the criminals and bring them to justice.
