Communication Competency
Communication Competency refers to the degree of achieving the communication goals by the communicators via appropriate and effective communication. Similarly, communication competence can be the capability to choose a communication behaviour, which is both effective and appropriate regarding a corresponding context. In perspective, interpersonal competency permits one to achieve the goals of communication without causing a loss to the other party (DeFleur et al., 2014). Communication competency involves the capacity to encode and decode a message, besides participating effectively in role-taking process and feedback (DeFleur et al., 2014). In the verge of communication, human beings select and serve as the primary sources that make up the messages. However, various factors influence the aspect of communication competency including prior communication, physical surroundings, sociocultural situations, and social relationships (DeFleur et al., 2014). Hence, it is appropriate to analyze one’s communication competence to realize the effectiveness of the daily communication.
A communication competence scale (CCS) is a tool developed to assist individuals assesses their capability pertinent to communication (DeFleur et al., 2014). In essence, it includes questions that help a person to gauge his or her level of interaction with the other persons. A CCS involves a set of questions that a person provides honest answers and then checks on the scale to determine his or her personal competency. Contextually, the CCS includes a range of possible scores that lie between 36 and 180. In essence, if the final CCS score falls out of the range, then an error occurred during the calculation process. The CCS has an absolute mean of 108. The absolute mean denotes that the person in context is flexible, sensitive, and assertive in the communication process as opposed to those with a low CCS (DeFleur et al., 2014). Thence, when there is a higher CCS score, it means that the communicators are more competent.
After taking the CCS test, my result was 126. The situation indicates that I have good communication skills, and I can get along well with other people in respect to conversations. The case is representative as I find myself interacting with most of my friends without having many problems. For example, in our discussions groups, I lead the conversations, and they seem smooth and lead us to attain our group objectives. On the other hand, Samira, my classmate got a score of 120 when she filled the CCS to evaluate my competence (DeFleur et al., 2014). Samira and I have interacted for almost four years.
