Sarah Baartman, Michelle Obama, Caster Semenya, and Serena Williams are celebrated African women who have made a significant impact on other people’s lives. Each of them has a different path in life, but their resilience to make a change and create a name for themselves is what makes them extraordinary African women. These four African women share some similarities but possess many differences in their careers and societal impacts on the African and African-American community.

Sarah Baartman (1789-1815)
She was the first Khoikhoi to land in Europe. The name Sarah was given to her by her Dutch slave master, and history does not share her native name. Her name itself is colonial and demeaning. In the Dutch, her name means a savage, uncivilized, and an uncouth slave woman (Scully & Crais, 2008). She had large buttocks, and her slave masters in Europe circus displayed her. Europeans considered her as a freak of nature.
