English learners, African American and indigenous students face similar and unique challenges in school. On similarities, all groups tend to lag behind native-born Whites in terms of school graduation and continuation (Varghese, 2016). This common experience on the part of indigenous, African American and ESL students is due to their shared political, cultural and socioeconomic status within the White-dominated American society. For instance, these groups of students are likely to come from low-income families and to attend poorly-equipped and staffed schools. As a result, they progress at a slower pace compared to their native-white counterparts due to limited access to quality education.
Nevertheless, the different groups of students also face unique challenges in American schools. For instance, immigrants are likely to experience language barriers and difficulties socializing due to cultural differences. Additionally, immigrant students may undergo cultural identity crisis due to the experience of transculturation (Varghese, 2016). Thus, immigrants are forced to negotiate more complex patterns of social interactions as they try to identify with different cultures.
