Abstract
The use of bird feeders in the British Columbia has increased over the recent past as people try to attract humming birds to their yards. This behavior has been linked to an increase in the habitation of birds in the suburbs and urban areas. The impact of feeders on visitation to other environment can be used to assess the possibility of changes in migration patterns in future if there is continued feeding of birds. The feeders play a vital role in provision of necessary nutrients for hummingbirds, but they are likely to limit their visitation to native plants. This research involved experiments such as placing nectar feeders near native plants in British Columbia, Canada. The results showed that feeders in the vicinity of native plants tended to lower visitation rate. Plants that were used include S. mexicana and S. fulgens that attracted not only hummingbirds but also other insects such as bees.
