Castration as a Means of Mitigating Sex Crimes and Re-Offending
1. Introduction
1.1 General introduction
Castration is one of the ways that has been adopted by many countries for dealing with issues relating to re-offending and sex crimes. Some sexual offenders have voluntarily come out and embraced the practise, a case study of 100 offenders in Britain that occurred in 2007 in which they volunteered for treatment but trials in England and Wales prisons were proposed (Aitkenhead, 2013). According to Aitkenhead (2013), a good example is that of Barry, who was a voyeur and made women feel uncomfortable. As a control measure, he underwent chemical castration which was offered in the form of a program at the prison which failed to work because it did not break the addiction (Aitkenhead, 2013). Furthermore, the method for castration can either be in the form of therapy or drugs (Dworzecki and Nowicka, 2017). The process may be done at the will of the offender or forcefully based on existing laws (Scott and Holmberg, 2003). A lot of research has been carried out in the recent years on how effective chemical castration is in the process of reducing recidivism among offenders (Meyer III and Cole, 2008).
