Thousands or even millions of people die every year because of organ failure. Most of them would have survived if only there were available organs that could have replaced the damaged one but due to lack of donors, they continue to suffer or the worst part, die. Now a team of researchers led by Professor Juan Carlos Izpisua Belmonte of the Salk Institute had successfully created a zygote which has the combined DNA of pigs and humans – a chimera that theoretically would be able to have human organs that are compatible for transplant.
First, his team is able to achieve rat-mouse chimeras by injecting pluripotent stem cells (PSCs) from a rat to a mouse using interspecies blastocyst complementation system with the aid of the device called CRISPR-Cas9.
