The Journey to authentic leadership begins with understanding yourself: your life stories, crucibles and setbacks. The journey to leadership will also require that the leader becomes self-aware as it is impossible to lead other people without first of all understanding the weaknesses and the strengths of oneself. Self-awareness makes it possible to interact with one's followers excellently (Arriaga et.al, 2018). When one consider his or her life stories, one is in a position to understand himself and the leadership destiny that one is yearning to arrive at in the future. life stories, crucibles and setbacks shape a person to be a better person as they provide experiences that can be passed on to other people (Schneider, 2014). Life’s crucibles and setbacks provides one with unique life experiences that shape the personality of a person and that prepares one to be a great leader.
I learned the hard way that leadership is not a singular destination but a marathon journey that progress through many stages until you reach your peak. Through ever stage a leader will learn some sets of skills that shapes him or her to the next leadership destination or position (Terrell et.al, 2018). To become a leader, one has to learn some things that build or shape his character towards having a leadership personality. It may take some time to learn and have the qualities that are required for one to lead other people (Rosenbach, 2018). Leadership is gruesome and complex gruesome, and therefore it is a long journey that involves a lot of learning through apprenticeship, benchmarking, and personal experiences.
