Racial, Spatial and Historical Dimensions of the COVID-19 Crisis
Introduction
Since appearing in the U.S, the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in partial socioeconomic hibernation, which has contributed to various economic, political, and social consequences. It has led to increased discussion about the disproportionate effect of this disease on African American groups than others. There has been a broader acknowledgement of the racial issue urgency in the medical literature. Although the increased COVID-19 death risk among the minorities has a positive correlation with pre-existing healthcare conditions due to biological and genetic factors, the general agreement is that the race differentials relates to socioeconomic factors evident in the working and living conditions. Understanding COVID-19 spatiotemporal dynamics helps design effective mitigation strategies and clarifies the pandemic's impact and extent. It is also critical in aiding community action, planning, and decision-making. The COVID-19 disease has a disproportionate effect on Black Americans as the number of deaths is two or three times higher compared to their population share. Apart from being disproportionally affected, African Americans were among the first people to start succumbing to the disease than other groups in the U.S. Do these asymmetric effects represent the 1930s racial segregation caused by discriminatory lending practices?
