Abstract
This report was mainly to be used to compare between the three small cities in British Columbia and investigate on which city can be the best for a single parent family to live. The cities were; Oak Bay, North Saanich, and North Vancouver. These three cities have almost the same environment for raising a single parent family. However, this research helped to come up with the best city which such a family can fit. The research was conducted by investigating on safety, house affordability, and convenience. From the research, the results obtained were that North Saanich would be the best city to settle a single parent family since it has several factors favoring single parenthood. The report concluded that North Saanich had the suitable factors which would be good for a single parent rearing his/her family. The factors were in terms of safety, house affordability, and convenience of the city.
Introduction
“Single parent” refers to a mother or a father who is divorced or widowed and has been raising kids alone. Single parent families might be encountered by several problems. This problem may range from one family to the other. These problems include safety problems in case of a single mother, low income, bringing up the family members to be a one family living happily and also other several factors like resources (Carleton & Brantingham, 2014). For a single parenthood, staying in a relatively cheap house in a safe city and where resources are sufficient and easily obtained, life would relatively become easier and happier. North Saanich has a long history of peace, low crime issues, resources are cheaper compared to Oak Bay and North Vancouver (Carleton & Brantingham, 2014). Therefore considering these factors, a single parent family can comfortably and happily live in North Saanich.
Most single-parent families are so cautious therefore consider a lot before fully settling in an area. One of the most important factors they consider is the safety of the family members in general and the children. The single parent taking care of the family ensures the first security of the family. He/she ensures that the family is safe always and no threat whatsoever. Therefore, for one parent, the security cannot be as intense as when both parents are together (Nunn & Irish, 2011). Therefore, settling in a secure place, the parent and the other members are assured of security. On the other hand, income for one parent would be low compared to the family with both parents, therefore, most single parents prefer choosing areas with cheaper resources as well as a cheap housing (Bruin & Cook, 2007).
Methods
This report was researched using secondary sources from online Libraries which had all the required information on the three British Columbia cities. The data concentrated on the three cities, that is, Oak Bay, North Saanich, and North Vancouver. This data was analyzed in consideration of three main factors which included safety of the family, convenient of the place and also home affordability (Bish, 2000). The report compiled all the three factors and using the method it was possible to come up with detailed results on which city would best suit single parent family.

Of the three cities, North Vancouver seemed to have the highest housing cost of $ 300 - $1200, Oak Bay has an average of $130 - $900. This amount is still high when one has low income. The cost of living in North Vancouver and Oak Bay seemed to be so high as compared to North Saanich which had relatively a cheaper cost of living of $80 - $500. From the range of the costs on the table, North Vancouver has consistently the highest costs with approximately 63 percent high cost of living (Bish, 2000). The other two, although they had high living standards, North Saanich had a better and cheaper cost of living than Oak Bay.
Safety
Figure 2 shows the crime rates of the three towns. That is Oak Bay, North Vancouver, and North Saanich.

From the table, crime levels on the three cities can be seen where North Vancouver seems to have the highest levels of crime of 78.2% overall crime rate which indicates a high insecurity level. Oak Bay has a bit a high level of insecurity as seen from the table 2 which involve 42.4% overall crime. Lastly, North Saanich has the least levels of crime with an overall crime rate of 34.7% (Carleton & Brantingham, 2014). Therefore, as a factor of security and safety, North Saanich seems to be the best of the three towns since it has the lowest overall percentage of crime. In all the forms of crimes be it violent or crime without violence, North Saanich had the least percentages of the same compared to the other two cities.

North Saanich has the highest percentage of convenience with an average of 47%, Oak Bay the second with a percentage of approximately 43% and North Vancouver has 29%. This data shows that North Saanich has the highest level of convenience hence the most suitable for single-parent family.
