Assessment 1 –Report on Mental Health Nursing
To the surprise of many, mental illness is very common among Australians, since almost half of the Australian population develops a certain degree of mental illness during their lives, regardless of the level of severity (Mental Health Commission, 2016). This issue must be taken seriously, since mental illness has an adverse impact on the physical health, as studies have shown that those suffering from mental illness have their life expectancies reduced by 15 to 20 years (Mental Health Commission, 2016). Not only that, but curing these types of illness come at a great cost to the Australian population, and requires a higher level of awareness among the Australian Citizens than that of physical illness. As a result, even though significant improvements have occurred in the area of physical health, yet more efforts are required to promote mental health.
Consequently, physicians have recently started to promote mental health in their practice, and more focus has been addressed towards improving the physical health of mental health patients. To add to this, the New South Wales government has devised a strategic plan to address mental health illness in Australia, among many other mental health acts and guidelines (Mental Health Commission of New South Wales, 2014).
