Social Determents of Health of the Black Kid
Columbus City in Ohio is one of the most populated cities in the United States of America with over 835,000 people largely made up of two big racial groups (Whites - 483,332 Black or African American-174,065) and other minor groups. The city has both urban and metropolitan hubs which are comprised of several economic drivers such as education, governance, and trade. Access to these economic drivers creates a disparity in the livelihoods and the quality of life that may be affected by either economic, social, or ethnicity.
Black kids are the at-risk subpopulation because of racism which haunts them before joining school throughout their lifetime. The issue of racism does not affect a certain gender but it starts in the early stages of children’s life, mostly between 4-6 years old (Ma, 2023). In most cases, racism towards the back kids/people is because of their income status which is highly influenced by the type of education, and access to essential services such as healthcare insurance amongst others. Statistics show that around 18% of the population in Columbus, which is comprised of mostly blacks, uneducated, and the disabled, is below the poverty level.

Access to healthcare is limited for this subpopulation, with fewer healthcare facilities located in their neighborhoods and many residents are uninsured. Transportation is also a significant issue, with many relying on public transport, which can be unreliable and further limits access to healthcare, jobs, and nutritious food. Racism has taken over fairness in Columbus which brings a great disparity in resource allocation and accessibility. The fact that the at-risk subpopulation is of the black ethnicity, they live in a miserable state with limited access to better ways of life in terms of education, food, and healthcare (Ma, 2023). Several environmental issues affect the African American subpopulation in Columbus, particularly in the Near East Side and South Linden areas. Poor air quality is a concern due to the proximity of industrial facilities and high-traffic areas. These neighborhoods also face issues with water quality, aging infrastructure, and a higher likelihood of exposure to hazardous waste or environmental toxins.
Racism is a major problem in Columbus which is mostly affecting the back kids. Since these kids face race discrimination from the early age of around 4 years, the is a rise in cases of depression with around 53% increase in depression symptoms and a rise in suicide cases of about 80% (Ma, 2023). High cases of adolescent suicides have been reported to be the major cause of premature deaths in the Back Kids subpopulations. Mental wellness is a great concern of the at-risk subpopulation which is fueled by the fact that this group is underinsured despite being below the poverty level. The people in this community have a major concern about their access and affordability to quality health care to treat the most probable disease (depression) in Columbus. The quality of life in Columbus is highly affected by racism which paralyzes all other privileges for human needs such as education, healthcare, and access to food sources.
Currently, the government is making efforts to provide Counselors and therapists who help black kids in overcoming their mental health problems. However, this has proved not to be solving the problem because of understaffing. The recommended capacity for the therapist is 250 students per therapist but currently, they are handling around 465 students (Kazdin, 2023). To address the Social Determinants of Health affecting black kids, there is a need to provide indiscriminative insurance services needed t...
