Introduction
Gladiator is one of the best 2000 films that was very thrilling and captured the attention of the audience. The film is mainly based on the life journey of a hero turned gladiator. The film also serves to portray the glory that was experienced by the ancient Rome. The film was availed to the theater in the 2000 and was accepted largely by the audience. The reason why the film captured the attention of the audience was because its scope and storyline was powerful and created a lasting impression to the audience(Bennett & Satre, 2000). The characters that are in the film are also very realistic which made it have high level of historical accuracy. It shows the concepts of the roman customs since it makes one to be rooted to against the emperor and hoping that a gladiator would make the world a difference place and shake the entire empire (Callenbach, 1970).
There are various pros and cons that are associated with the film. The pros that Maximus depicts are the fact that he shows a lot of inspiration and power during the time he encountered the battle with the incoming emperor. This was despite the fact that his family was killed. The musical effect that was incorporated in the film was also classical in matching well with the state in which the character was and also made the film to reach a frenetic pace in the heights of the battles. The musical effects had tones that varied occasionally creating some melancholic tones that captured the attentions of the audience and made them be part of the film.(Bennet and satre 2000).
The cons that are depicted by the film on the other hand are the challenges that challenges that Maximus encountered when the incoming emperor wanted to grab power from him. The beginning of the movie is a revelation of the reality of hand to hand combat that the past battles were. The film is centered on battles that took place in the gladiatorial arena and the brutal and blood shedding fights that took place in the arena.(Callenbach 1970).
Aspect of discussion
The film gladiator was created mainly with the focus of thrusting the target audience into a gladiatorial kind of arena. The film portrays and depicts the glory of the ancient kingdom of Roman Empire and also the various realities of the battle that were being witnessed in the empire. The storyline of the film revolves around the life journey of Maximus who was the Roman general. The general was facing a threat from the incoming Roman emperor. The former wanted to grab the kingdom away from the general who was at that moment the head to the empire(Shukman 2000). The film introduces the torture that the successful general faced when he found himself on the wrong side of the power.
The power tussle that emerged between him and the incoming emperor led to the death his family members. He was also highly disgraced and humiliated. It is worth mentioning that amidst the challenges that he was going through, the film portrays him as a man who never gave up. Maximus avenges the killing of his family members and the disgraced he faced by fighting back to Rome as a gladiator. The fight reaches a climax in the film when he the gladiator clashes with the usurping Emperor Commondus (Shukman 2000). The thrilling scenes in the film are made appealing by the musical effects that were used in making the film since the music acts as the pace and bring out the excitement when telling the entire tale. The music that has been used in the film has a lot effects on the audience as it creates an impression of the “pirates of Caribbean” which was a musical track of Zimmer sound track.
The film may not give the actual historical accuracy if overviewed by historical purists. This is precipitated by the fact that it may look as if the all concept is purely exaggerated and does not link with the history of the Roman Empire. The film also tries to state the ability of one single gladiator to challenge the entire empire without the help of other people. This may render it totally inaccurate and unrealistic. However, a critical reflection of the film shows how the history of the ancient Roman Empire is well served (Grindon 2000). This is mainly because the film depicts the way the roman troops were making their movement when they were launching their attacks on the enemy territory. The battle tactics that the gladiator was using when he fought against the empire is the same tactics that he roman troops used when they were combating any form of enemies that trespassed into the empire of posed a threat to it. (Sheppard 1985)
The visual scope that the film is based on is well established since it creates a lasting impression on the minds of the audience. It shows the way the ancient European battlefields were structured and the way the troops at that particular time prepared themselves for the battle. The city of Rome which was a great empire at that particular time when the film was created is retransformed through the use of the computer generated concepts and effects which give the audience a lasting picture of how the events of the past were. The weapon and the dressing that was there clearly revealed the way the past was by capturing the attention of the viewers.(Grindon 2000)
