You hypothesize that students in fraternities/sororities on your campus are more extroverted (on an introversion/extroversion scale) than other students. To answer your research question, you need to obtain a sample of “Greek” students and a sample of “independent” students. For each of these two populations of students, how would you obtain simple random samples using the four steps described in this chapter?
In simple random sampling, every item in a population has an equal chance and probability of being chosen in the sample. The sampling method is most appropriate when dealing with a large population, but it can be challenging to find a credible sampling frame (Arnab, 2017). In this case I will follow the four steps involved in selecting simple random samples of Greek students and independent students on my campus. The first step I will compile a list of all the Greek and independent students for instance if the Greek students are X and independent ones are Y, and then I will have a list containing 100 names and 200 names respectively. In the second step I will give each of them a sequential number so as to get a sampling frame. For the Greek students I will number them 1 to X and the independent ones 1 to Y.
