The Present Study
In each of these studies, the researchers were able to realize that corporal punishment had counterproductive effects on the development of a child during child rearing. Child rearing significantly contributes to the behavior patterns of the child as they grow. For years, child psychologists have sought to establish the applicability of the old age adage “spare the rod spoil the child.” Traditionally, the most preferred aspect of correcting a child when they do wrong was not based on reprimanding them, but on punishing them. The punitive approach is what produces negative behavior patterns associated with aggression. The studies that have got documented in the literature review have established that when corporal punishment get inflicted upon a child, the child tends to concentrate on the pain rather than on the intention of the person inflicting the pain. The concentration on the pain is what produces adverse outcomes.
Traditional debates on corporal punishment have always got centered on the intention of the action rather than the feelings of the child. Initially, researchers took very little notice on the input of children because they got viewed as subjects who were not able to make decisions based on logic thought. Therefore, it was upon the caregiver to make arrangements for the child. However, current approaches in child psychology have invented ways of looking at the outcomes of corporal punishment by studying the behavior patterns of children who get subjected to beatings against children whose caregivers opt for alternative corrective methods. According to Bitensky (2006), corporal punishment has been studied extensively with prison subjects, and the general realization is that it only promotes animosity between prisoners and wardens.
