You can observe a park A key part of Sociological Research is observation. This exercise and the resultant paper you hand in will give you some insight into the ethnographic - or case study - process. For this project, you will choose a public location, such as: places on campus, your local mall/mall food court, bookstore/library, park, gym, church/temple, concert, museum, etc. Anywhere you think you will find people . (Please note, students MAY NOT use their place of employment or a class atschool for the Observation. As well, work with protected populations must follow specific guidelines.) You will spend about a half hour to an hour observing the people in this area. You'll want to note what they're doing, how they're acting, how they're dressed, etc. Once you have gathered your notes you will then write up a 4-5 page summary of your experience. In your summary you will want to address the following questions: WHERE did you conduct your research? As well, you'll want to describe the area you observed in addition to naming it. If it is food court, are there many tables, or just a few? Is it a small area, a large area? You'll want to make sure the area you choose is big enough to get a few different people involved, but not big enough that you'll need hours to cover the place. WHEN did you conduct your research? As with the above question, I'm not just asking for the exact time but also some background. Why did you choose this time? What might be the motivation or impetus to go during this time? “It was when I was available” or “I happened to be here” are in sufficient answers. Was it lunch time, rush hour, the early morning? You want to pick times based on when you think people will be around. WHO were you observing? This section should also include some of your observations about how people were dressed, and if there were differences between people like employee/customer. It should include any observable demographic information you were table to glean from the groups you saw. (Age, race, ethnicity, language, social class, etc.) WHAT were people doing during the time you observed them? Describe some of the activities you saw while you were observing these people. Were people eating, reading, talking, walking through? Again, provide depth and thought in describe these behaviors. It should not just be a laundry list. HOW were peoples’ actions different than what you expected? In this section you should offer your reactions to the activities that fell outside of what you thought would happen in that place. Were there people not eating in the food court, if so what were they doing? Were there people selling things at the park as part of a fair? In some cases you may not find anything different from your expectations. In that case talk about how the activities conformed to your expectations. WHY do you think this conformity/these differences exist? Is there a reason some talking is allowed in a library or church? Why do you think people might be allowed to read book before buying them? Talk about the reasons why you think some of the behaviors you observe happen in that space. EVALUATE your research. Using the concepts about the process of research gathering talked about in Chapters 1 & 2, discuss how you went about your research. Was it inductive or deductive? Macro-level, Micro-level, Meso-Level? Did you rely on empirical generalization? Lastly, TALK about your reaction to doing this project. This last section is a chance for you to talk about how you felt watching people. Did you feel uncomfortable if they looked back at you? Were you thinking of going up an asking someone something? This should be a personal section and not just a summary of the paper. Observation Research at the Five-Star Restaurant Student's Name Institution Course Name and Number Instructor's Name Date Observation Research at the Five-Star Restaurant I went to the Five Star Restaurant located in the western part of the town where many people from diverse races, gender, couples, stranger family, workers, and places gather to have their meals. The restaurant is located on about fifty by a hundred land, accommodating ordinary people, which is enough for the observation study. The restaurant has around sixty tables. The size and the number of customers the restaurant can accommodate provides enough and conducive space for me to conduct my studies to draw evaluation. Its location in the town offered a good place for access by my target population. I went earlier and accessed the seat, which faces a lot of many tables, so I could witness how space is used to carry messages among persons in diverse relationships. I conducted my observation on Friday, 21st November, during lunch hour since it was convenient for me as I always have fewer lessons on that particular day. During this time, I'm always freely available. We were also given two hours as a class for the study, which comes after lunch hour to enable us to carry out this research, which helped me to continue with critical thinking, draw my conclusion about the research carried out and write a report. In addition, lunch hour provides a scope of a wide field of study because it is when most people visit the restaurant for their meals. Being accessible by scholars, workers, locals, and strangers due to its good location enabled me to achieve my primary aim of accessing it when many customers are available and its eventful nature. I aimed at the non-scholars, workers, parents, locals, and strangers to capture the behavior of the inter-relationship and cultural differences between the customers. I avoided the student since most of their characters can easily be angered by the tiresomeness of the studies, harassment by the questions, and exams, among other things, which would have altered my results. Also, the restaurant's location in the town is accessible to more non-scholars; thus, I had to target them for my observation research study. I observed different employees, locals, and strangers based on their culture, for instance, how they interact with waiters, and other customers, their spiritual behavior, and their dress code, among others. Some were social and respectful to the waiter, but some were harsh and moody, and some created other customers with smile-covered faces. In contrast, others did not bother, some were officially dressed while others were not, and finally, some prayed just before their meals, whereas others did not. Fundamentally, I noticed customers staring at each other to know each other and were busy talking and sharing ideas in groups of five or fewer as per the arrangement of the restaurant. Few individuals who lacked partners to interact with showed faces of lack of excitement and focused on their phones to keep them busy. Some customers bought fruits and drinks from those who had come to carry out their business in the restaurant. Some people disregard gender engagement in some dance and other entertainment activities offered at the forefront part isolated aside for this role to break the monotony of the customer whose food was under preparation. After servers provided meals, most people diverted their attention and focus to eating them, although some maintained their talks and idea sharing. People's activities vary depending on their beliefs, traits, the activities they engage in, the settings they come from, and their intention to visit the restaurant. This led to emerging characteristics that I could not expect in the restaurant. I expected all people to be respectful to the waitpersons, but unfortunately, some customers absurdly were harsh to them, commanding and mistreating them in different ways contrary to my expectations. Some people were not eating; some came to sell their commodities to the customers of their interest, such as fruits and drinks, which were not offered in the restaurant. Contrary to my expectations, customers took their time in the hotel to have their meals, interacted well, and left after meals in anticipation of rushing back to their daily activities. These differences arose due to the differences in the intentions of coming to the restaurant. The sellers thought the restaurant could offer them many customers for the drinks and fruits to provide a balanced diet to the food provided. The differences in the customer's approach to waitpeople rose due to the settings people came from, their faith, culture, and beliefs. Some customers have strong religious and cultural beliefs, so when the waiters do things contrary to their feelings, they anger them. Also, people came with an excellent mind for interactions which made them consider social relations and freely interacted, taking enough time to have meals before returning to their activities. The way some waiters approached their clients also made them behave differently based on the context.
