Abstract
The paper is done to study the case for Ms Simpsons. Just like any other engineer what she went through is something that affects all the engineers in one way or the other. Their loyalty to their job is tested, and it is up to them to know which the ideal way to follow is. It might be tricky depending on what is being put at risk; however, in it all sacrifices must be done. Through the paper, we are going to see the danger of every move she may end up causing is when she makes the decision.
Introduction
Just like each country has its ethics and conducts that govern the country, even professionals have their own. In this case, the engineers are not left behind. Any professional engineer has the duty to the country they are working for people who cannot defend themselves i.e, the common man. In this case, Ms Simpson is not an exception. As much as she is employed, and she has to obey the employer at times it is advantageous to consider the bigger picture. She might be obedient, but the people who will get being hurt along are unusually many. After all when she was given the title she made an oath serve and protect the people; therefore, this should be her number 1 consideration. The people might not know what is happening, because one is obliged to keep them safe that becomes her number one priority no matter what will be affect.
Engineers should be honest
As the professional conduct, this is the number one consideration an engineer should have at the back of their mind. To begin with it is the duty of the engineer to inform and advise the employer. In this case, we see Ms Simpson did exactly that. She told her employer what would happen, but instead the manager took it on the negative aspect. This could be because he did not know what he was dealing with or he was just being ignorant. The other aspect is maybe the manager was insecure, or he was bribed. The fact that Ms Simpson was more educated than him might have made him to be on the balance. That is why he had doing all that he can hinder her from taking the case ahead and getting all the credit. We can see in all this Ms Simpsons is after the interest of the people whereby she goes the extra mile to find solutions with the city officials. To her she is seeing the dangers that are going to happen now and in the future but the manager is just interested in solving the issues as they arise. To him what will affect the people is his least concern. That is why he uses the authority that he has to ensure that Ms Simpson remains silent. This is by going the extra mile and putting her job in the weighing balance. By giving the responsibility to the Technician might be a way of him trying to show Ms Simpson education is not everything, but a way of maybe bribing the technician to be silent. In it, all we Ms Simpson as a woman of unusually high integrity, this is by how she handled the whole case. She could easily have asked for help from another engineer, but she observed protocol. The fact that it is against the code of conducts maybe that is the main reason she never thought of it. When her job was at sake she could easily have cooperated with the manager and maybe she could even have gotten a promotion instead, but she was not after her selfish interest. All she cared about is the people who are put in her care.
To serve the public interest
The whole of this case we see the Ms Simpson striving serve the public interest. We can see she was willing to go ahead and inform the ministry of environment of the dangers at hand. She had no self interest all she did was for the benefit to the people. In spite her job being at stake she, this is clearly shown by her going the extra mile, and discussing the whole issue with the city officials even after she had been warned by her manager. Her interest was to conserve the environment for the sake of future generation. She could easily have taken the option the manger was offering, but she refused. At the back of her head, she knew that if that is done by the time something is done it might be too late.
An engineer should not be able to deceive the public
By not taking the appropriate action, the manager was indirectly deceiving the public. The people were not terribly aware of the exact danger that was around them. Therefore, by him not taking the right measures he was indirectly deceiving the people. However, it was not professional by her going behind her manger and discussing the issue with the city officials without the manager knowing about it. She might have had the interest of the people at the back of her head, but that also was like disclosing crucial information about her job with outsiders. She was indirectly deceiving the manager that it was him alone who knew exactly what was happening. It is also against the conducts for her to discuss this issues with outsiders without consent of her employer, in this case the manager. As her docket, she could have done things that she could handle before involving the other parties. For instance, she could have privately expanded the sewer when they were expanding the plant. She could also have gone ahead and prepared a document that could be sent to the press. As this is part of her responsibility according to the ethical codes of conduct. This could have been more effective, and she could have informed the public in the right manner with her using the powers that she has.
Obligations
As an engineer, Ms Simpson carried her duty to the latter. Unlike many, she was ready to follow the ethical code of conduct to the latter of which is not common, but she did it. The fact that she was putting her job on the line, many would have easily had taken a bribe from the manager or just listen to what he wanted. She had the obligation to the people; therefore, she did all she can through how she knows to prove that. However, she was also obligated to obey the manager, therefore, to some extent she failed there. The fact that she has the obligation for the health of the people she did made the right decision for their sake. Ms Simpsons showed an unusually high level of courage and integrity in how she handled the case. She also showed she was loyal to the people also to her job. Many could have feared the manager and shy off but, this was not the case with her. This also showed the high level of her competence. Ms Simpson not only did she have ...
