Abstract
Most Latin America countries encountered several crimes of torture and enforced disappearances in the middle of the 20th century. In the ‘80s, the region transitioned from ignoring international laws ranging from human rights to abide by them. This research is subdivided into three main subtopics. First, it assesses the social and political context in Chile and narrows it down to the military dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet. Second, the research provides a critical analysis of the physical torture, disappearances, and other atrocities Chileans who were on opposition endured. The last part of this research will provide the laws and human rights actors in Chile and find out the steps that these laws and international human rights are playing to ensure that offenders are brought to book in Chile.
