Thesis and Tech Over-view
Continued technological advancement has paved way for the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in many activities including security operations. AI has continued to transform the world, creating both positive and negative impacts. To some people the changes brought by AI are good, whereas to others it is challenging. Common complaint is that Artificial intelligence has evolved workforce, leading to loss of jobs to machines CITATION Jor15 \l 1033 (Jordan & Mitchell, 2015). The difficulty is for people to identify their passion for the new responsibilities that require their abilities. A study done by PwC reveals that AI is likely to occupy over 7 million available jobs and only less than 8 million jobs could be created between 2017 to 2037 CITATION Mar211 \l 1033 (Marr, 2021). This shows how challenging life will be for those replaced by Artificial intelligence. In another perspective, the United States adversaries and competitors use various intelligence disciplines to collect information for specific reasons. Some of disciplines are human intelligence (HUMINT), open source intelligence (OSINT), signals intelligence (SIGINT), and measurement and signatures intelligence (MASINT). Each discipline is employed in a unique way to gather information to use against the US.
This research entails examining and analyzing the potential impacts of AI on those disciplines. Specific technologies of focus are virtual agents, biometrics, deep learning platforms, cyber defense, and machine learning platforms. The objectives of this study are to identify the current utilization or status of technology, future timelines and potential use cases, and assess future challenges of those technologies. The goals are to create plans for the US to use those technologies, create measures to counter threats posed by those technologies to the U.S national security, and check the extend in which those technologies will change the nature of intelligence.
Impacts of Artificial Intelligence
Current utilization or Status of Technology:
The current status of technological has made it easy to conduct artificial intelligence activities. Today there is computer programs which improve multitasking skills, fluid intelligence, improve memory, and other cognitive activities. Availability of digital tools provide remote monitoring, self-engagement, interventions, and training skills. Technological advancement has been utilized to improve artificial intelligence. The end result is provision of information to various agencies such as security, law enforcement, and communication agencies. Some of the information provided are about drug trafficking, international organized crime, terrorism, and weapons proliferation. Besides, most of the time intelligent agencies are required to get information concerning foreign entities, persons, and groups. They are always successful because of flexibility created by technological advancement. The agencies easily access essentially required information by the help of robots, tracking programs, drones, and satellites, among others.
Intelligent agencies in the US are using technologies such as virtual agents to gather intelligence to create a detailed knowledge of threats to the country. The assessment and investigation process help the country’s intelligence officials decide how to respond to threats and choose the best protective techniques. The country’s judgement on severity of various threats and the most suitable way to allocate resources are wisely done by the Homeland Security Department. Intelligence communities in different parts of the world are at crossroads. The growing proliferation of technologies in terms of block chain, artificial intelligence, robotics, big data, and the internet of things in these communities has created data breaches and increased threat to intelligence agencies in the United States. Given that technological tools are ubiquitous and affordable, bad people use them for malicious reasons.
Artificial intelligence has several challenges which the United States must deal with for national security concerns. The challenges include Artificial Intelligence bias, Shift in human experience, Accelerated Hacking, Artificial intelligence terrorism, and global regulations. AI bias result from error made when building AI algorithms. Biased algorithms normally produce misleading results. The knowledge enhanced by technological advancement in AI encourage hacking CITATION Mar211 \l 1033 (Marr, 2021). Since AI exceeds human experience, people use it for phishing and hacking systems. Terrorism has become a major threat to national security. Terrorist groups use autonomous drones and robots to remotely attack and spread disease to their enemies. Unless the government and law enforcement bodies adjust to the new threats, it would be hard to combat them in future. The adjustment will need time and extensive reasoning to produce the best AI applications. Countries are using AI to for global regulations. These regulations may prevent specific countries from accessing one’s air space CITATION Mar211 \l 1033 (Marr, 2021). Since these countries are close, such a regulation adversely affects regulated countries.
Future Timelines and Potential Use Cases:
The rapid growth of technology shows more change and impacts in future. This is visible in technological breakthroughs witnessed in the recent period. The breakthroughs have enabled intelligence bodies to break beyond historically accept truths. Today the industrial structure and hierarchical of these bodies are still changing, shifting to new technologies. The new change is redefining human roles in intelligence process. A common sign of progress is Open-source intelligence (OSINT) CITATION Her19 \l 1033 (Hershkovtz, 2019). This intelligent discipline describes unclassified and accessible information to the public. Initially, this information was very inferior but the emergence of OSINT technologies brought change. Things are changing and greater improvement in OSINT and related concepts will make it easy to acquire information.
Some of the future potential use cases of AI in future are improved private services and national intelligence, Increased spy business aided by big data, and changing government hegemony in artificial intelligence. The United States has improved dynamic cooperation between private and national intelligence organization to help avert threats to national intelligence. For example, the country established In-Q-Tel-a venture fund to support innovative industries providing security services CITATION Her19 \l 1033 (Hershkovtz, 2019). The fund has enhanced the US intelligence, something that promises a great future.
Assessment of Future Challenges: Rapid proliferation of technology intelligence has future challenges. One of the challenges is data privacy and security. Deep and machine learning platforms depend on data and resources and data is generated from million users across the country CITATION Vad21 \l 1033 (Vadapalli, 2021). So, there is a high likelihood that this data can be used for wrong motives. Since information come from different locations across the world, it is possible to experience data leakage. This can cause security threat to the country. Combating this problem will be hard if companies don’t develop strategies to ensure that data is not leaked or sent back to servers. Another future challenge is data bias due to data scarcity. Many companies facing charges for unethical use of data will not be able to access correct data to make application, and would eventually cause bias CITATION Vad21 \l 1033 (Vadapalli, 2021). Many countries have imposed strict rules on information technology to regulate data flow. The rule will affect many companies in future.
Plan for the U.S. to use these Technologies for Intelligence
The U.S. leverage of AI to advance U.S. nationalinterests:
The United States plan to use biometrics, virtual agents, cyber defense, deep learning, and machine learning programs for intelligence. The technologies would be used to gather information for enhancing security and protection from the US adversaries and competitors. The country will use biometrics-enabled intelligence for addressing identity problems. The U.S. intelligence personnel will use biometrics data to establish identity, as well as a basis to recommend action. The intelligence agencies in the country is planning to overcome challenges encountered in biometrics-enabled intelligence to fight adversaries. Some of the challenges to overcomes are difficulty in communicating threats in real time, monitoring, cleansing identity information, and tracking problems. The measures would help in identifying risks and protecting the country.
Another technology to be used is cyber defense. It serves in cyber security intelligence. This technology would help in detecting the intent and capabilities of malicious cyber threats through identification of emerging threats and risks, trends, and patterns. The findings would help in providing timely warnings. Cyber threat/attack is dangerous to the national security. It can cause breaches of national security threats, failure of military equipment, and electrical blackouts leading to theft or loss of sensitive and valuable data. Cyber threat can also paralyze systems and disrupt computer networks. The US plans to improve cyber security intelligence to prevent such threats.
The country will use Deep learning, machine learning platforms, and virtual ag...
